Westward Expansion The Affect on Native Americans Writer and historian Noel Ignatiev posed the question, â€Å"What is the role of westward expansion in American culture?† His answer points the reader in an entirely different direction than a person of average patriotic and historic beliefs would have expected. What was and is our belief about ourselves as we examine the westward expansion are both as enlightening as it is painful. This, of course depends on whose historical perspective it is. The proud history widely recognized by most Americans, focuses on the story of the Puritans quest for freedom and the expansion west as natural extension of this movement to the new continent. It tells of the struggles and successes, colonization of the new world, as well as the heroic fight for independence from England. However, from the perspective of the black slaves or Native Americans, the story of our heritage and the subsequent expansion west is much less than heroic. It is a story of man’s inhumanity to his fellow beings.1 During the nineteenth century just after the War of 1812 there was a significant migration of people with no land and no slaves to remaining lands in the east. Around this time speculators were making a great deal of money selling land, sometimes making ten times what they would pay for it. Professor William Scarborough in an Internet article about the Indians displacement in the 19th century writes of one man, â€Å"Guy S. Whitfield of Alabama, who said he was making a thousand dollars a week for land speculation.† When the land was purchased it need to be cleared and worked. The following five sentences illustrate various ways in which the wrong word order or choice of phrasing can obfuscate meaning; discussion and a revision follows each example. 1. Various supervisors have developed their own risk assessment methodologies independently, which are not always directly comparable. A restrictive clause (one that starts with which and provides an additional and optional detail), should immediately follow the word or phrase it refers to (after the intervening comma, that is); do not permit another part of speech, such as the adverb independently, in this example, to separate them: â€Å"Various supervisors have independently developed their own risk assessment methodologies, which are not always directly comparable.† 2. If you’d like to read more about Smith’s beliefs, many more of them are detailed on his website. Many more of Smith’s beliefs are detailed on his website whether you’d like to read more about them or not. The following revision of a false conditional expresses the immutable presence of Smith’s beliefs on his website regardless of your interest in reading about them: â€Å"If you’d like to read more about Smith’s beliefs, visit his website to read many more of them.† 3. Conventional data-management strategies used to factor in only data sources within the enterprise. This sentence states that at a previous time, something occurred. However, the phrase â€Å"used to† could be misunderstood to mean â€Å"employed in order to,† leading to further confusion because the sentence then appears to be incomplete, because there is no object. Alternatively, the reader might read â€Å"used to† to mean â€Å"accustomed to,† with the same result. The sentence will read unambiguously if the verb phrase is altered, as in â€Å"Conventional data-management strategies previously factored in only data sources within the enterprise.† 5. Every rape is not a gender-motivated hate crime. This sentence states that of all the rapes committed, none is a gender-motivated hate crime. The statement is clumsy, but worse, it is not what the writer meant to say. The point that although some or many rapes may be committed with that motivation, others are not. Doyles Background Essay Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh. He was one of the children whose father was poorly paid civil servant and an alcoholic. Doyle married Louise Hawkins in 1885 and at the time he was interested in physic studies but studied medicine which he gave up as he was not succeeding. So instead he decided to pursue his first love which was writing. The features that make a gripping crime story are the development of suspense and mystery. In the story are The man with the twisted lip mystery is built up when Neville S. t Clair, alias the beggar Hugh Boone, sends his wife a letter explaining of his good health when Holmes believes hes been murdered. Crime writers also use stereotypical characters. This is typical in both Doyles stories and modern day crime writing. The most likeliest of villains is a middle aged, aggressive, non-sociable man. (NR RoyCott) Another important feature to a crime story is the plot, it has to be original and it has to spark intrigue and enigma. The investigator who has the job of solving the crime has to be unique, resourceful and have super human intelligence and skill, something which Holmes has in abundance. Holmes character is one of originality. He is in one way eccentric due to the strange and bizarre challenging cases that he thrives on solving. Holmes is a very observant and intelligent man and acknowledges clues other people wouldnt. This art of solving clues enables him to hypothesise the outcome. He noticed a tattoo on Vabez Wilsons arm revealing he had once travelled to China, and he noticed the dirt on Vincent Spauldings knees meaning he had been digging. Though intelligent, Holmes is also extremely unpredictable. He can at one moment seem calm and deep in thought, but the next he is activated by an ecstasy of movement. He has high morals, he never takes advantage of desperate people. (S. t Claires wife), he helps the poor, and the only money he accepts is that of his own expenses. (As to reward my possession is its reward you are at liberty to defray whatever expenses I may be put to at the time which suits you best). Doyle uses the character of Watson to highlight Holmes intelligence when Holmes is approached by a victim, he plunges them into deep non-stop questioning. While seeming unsympathetic he is in deep concentration trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. This is in contrast to Watson, he is extremely sympathetic and comforting Watson rarely sees the relevance of some pieces of information. (In The Speckled Band Watson doesnt think twice about the bell cord that opens the narrow ventilation). Sometimes though, Watson appears to be clever but in the end the clue is of irrelevance. (Watson looking at footprints in mud while Holmes in looking around the boundaries of Vulias room for means of entrance). Holmes perceptiveness is again acknowledged in the concluding part of the story when he reveals all to Watson. Doyles techniques for creating suspense and tension are the same as those used in crime writing today. He sets the plot in typical settings often dark or isolated. (Stoke Maran / Opium Den). He builds up tension by using vivid description as in The Speckled Band where Holmes interpretation of stoke Maran is, The central portion was in little better repair, but the right hand block was comparatively modern, and the blinds in the windows with the blue smoke curling up from the chimneys showed this was were the family lived. The plot of Holmes stories usually start off with the victim approaching Holmes for advice and there is a twist of fate, with a few red herrings to throw the reader off the trail. The plot ends when Holmes and Watson wait for the criminal in the pitch darkness usually with Watson poised with his cocked revolver. And left us in pitch darkness as I have never experienced before. The smell of metal remained to assure us that the light was still there ready, to flash out at a moments notice. Doyle introduces clues at a rapid rate so there are a number of possibilities. The importance of some clues is not always apparent, but is explained at the end by who else but Holmes. The introduction of clues starts very early, as soon as Holmes is approached by the victim. In all 3 stories the motivation for crime is MONEY (S. t Claire begs for money / Dr RoyCott murders so no-one can claim inheritance / and Vincent Spaulding trying to rob the bank). Holmes uses power of observation to eliminate people from his enquiries. He also uses personal experiences from other crimes to help him deduct a conclusion . As a mule, when I have heard some slight indication of the course of events I am able to guide myself by the thousands of other similar cases. Other cases can appear important but some are red herrings such as the gypsies in The Speckled Band which added mystery to the stories. But all is in hand as Holmes uses his scientific knowledge and other methods of investigation which were relatively new to the Victorians. He is also very logical and never looks past the obvious. Doyles stories are as interesting today as they were for Victorians 100 years ago because they are original, peculiar and they still spark intrigue for readers today. Doyles stories were the first and since then they have set a standard for the rest. There are similarities between original detective stories and modern detective genre because they both have a fast pace, a twist in the middle, and a final confrontation.

Saint Augustine Saint Augustine (354-430 AD), also known as Augustine of Hippo created an image of himself through his writings and teachings. He was born in Tagaste, a town in North Africa, on November 13, 354 AD. He was born into a middle class family. Patricius, his father, was a pagan, but later converted to Christianity because of his wife, Monica, was a devout Christian. Augustine’s mother, who was devoted to the Roman Catholic church, constantly tried for her son's conversion. Augustine was educated as a lecturer in the former North African cities of Tagaste, Madaura, and Carthage. The philosophical works of Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman speaker and politician, inspired Augustine to become a seeker after truth. Augustine engaged restlessly in philosophical studies, and passed from one phase of thought to another, unable to find satisfaction. From 373 until 382, in Carthage, he conformed to Manichaeism, a dualistic philosophy dealing with the conflict between good and evil. This seemed to be the answer to the confusion in his own heart. It solved the mysteries that confused him in his own experience. After realizing that this philosophy wouldn’t make a great ethical system, he abandoned this philosophy. After being educated throughout North Africa, he left Carthage and in 384 found himself in Milan where he would pursue his career of a professor in rhetoric. Also, in Milan he met and was influenced by the bishop, Ambrose. With this, Augustine was at tracted again to Christianity and was baptized by Ambrose in 387. Augustine was also influenced by Platonism. He than returned to North Africa where he became the bishop of Hippo in 391, a title he held until he died. This great â€Å"Father of the Church,† wrote a handbook on the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and love. The Enchiridion on Faith, Hope, and Love was written in the year 420. It is a brief handbook on the proper mode of serving God, through faith, hope, and love. It is easy to say what one ought to believe, what to hope for, and what to love. But to defend our doctrines against the slander of those who think differently is a more difficult and detailed task. If one is to have this wisdom, it is not enough just to put an enchiridion in the hand. It is also necessary that a great eagerness be in the heart. Saint Augustine says that God created all things good. In Chapter XI, ... ...t evil is but the absence of good. I feel that God did make everything good, and it is the absence of good that causes evil. People choose the road they feel like taking throughout life. I think of it this way; God started us off on this world all consisting of good and it is we who choose to become evil. This follows through with Augustine’s next idea, which I also agree with, in that there can be no evil where there is no good. This holds true because everybody consists of good, and evil is the absence of good, so that just concludes that in order for evil there must be good. Augustine also says that good and evil can exist at the same time, but evil cannot exist without good, however, good can exist without evil. I feel that one can embody good and evil, there are many humans like that now. It’s true that evil cannot exist without good because we are only evil when we aren’t good, but one can be good without being evil. I hope I have made it clear that there are some points that I agree with and there are some ideas of Augustine that I don’t agree with. As for the way to serve God, I believe that as long as you live your life to the best of your ability, you will succeed.

Background of the Study Students I. D’s are a good way to increase the campus security. The project gate entry used I.D system has provided benefits to the events have made security for educational institutions. From the smallest charter school to the largest university, all concerned about running an efficient, low cost security solution that provides safety for its students. 3. Statement of the Problem The proponents of the study have inv estigated the topic â€Å"I. D SYSTEM USING SMS TECHNOLOGY†. In order to seek the solution and answer to the difficuilties encountered by the teachers and parents too. The MACCIM ROYAL ACCADEMY is using a manual system.Teachers used a recording book that serves as the records for their attendance of their student and it may cause a hard time because of one by one checking and writing the attendance of their students that can also cause of waste of time. D System Using Short Message Service (SMS). With these, it helps the teachers lessens their work in checking the attendance of their student for parents, it help them to know whether their child is truly went to school or not with the help of the system that be able to sent them a short message saying that their child really went to school.The system is able to check the student’s attendance whenever they enter the gate of the school with the help of their Bar Coded I. D and the system will automatically send a short message to the guardian’s contact number that will b e seeing in the students I. D that will be registered in the main server. 2. LIMITATIONS The limitations of the proposed system are as follows: †¢ The system relies on electricity not unless there is a generator at hand. †¢ The system cannot send a message to a single person. †¢ Simple txt message only. There is no scope for any graphics or audio. The message that they will receive will only have the information about the attendance of the student and nothing more. 6. Writers often produce usage errors in one of several ways. They misuse a word with a meaning similar to that of a more appropriate term, they employ the wrong homophone- a word that sounds like the intended term but it spelled differently- or they mangle an idiom. Each of these sentence demonstrates one of these errors, and a discussion and a revision accompanies each. 1. YOU CANNOT FORCE LIKE I wrote a blog post recently about how readers can help authors on Amazon. You are reading my blog, right? http://chopeclark.com/2012/09/when-you-go-to-amazon-dont-just-buy-a-book/ One of the suggestions involved clicking the little orange and white thumbs-up hand so that it turns gray, liking the book page, or the author page. Its a simple gesture to tell the author youve been there and appreciate what they are doing. Those types of likes are easy and have become more etiquette that critical in nature. Some likes, however, arent so clean and simple. For example, people liking your book, blog, articles, or even your Facebook notes. Someone out there is going to disagree about whether your are talented. While many of my readers loved to hate Alan, a character in Lowcountry Bribe, one painted him as too shallow and one-dimensional. So guess what I agonized over for a day or two? Then theres the other side of the coin, when you dont like others work. I belong to two writers groups. Eventually, a member introduces a piece I just cannot connect with. Maybe its the genre, the plot, even the dialogue, but it does not click. Sometimes the clash is such that I really dont want to critique it, knowing Ill be frustrated having to trudge through it and come out on the other end not having enjoyed the trip. For instance, someone Facebook messaged me a couple weeks ago, proud about his book release. I congratulated him. He then asked, Will you buy it? I glanced at the title, then the Amazon page. It was a how-to improve your life message. I replied that I was swamped with books to read at present with 30 on my nightstand and who-knows-how-many on my Kindle. He replied, Will you read it in a few weeks? I finally replied, Sorry. Im in a good place with my life, so I dont need self-help material. It just wasnt something I wanted to read. Then theres the bestseller list that everyone oohs and aahs over. I dont like many of them. As blasphemous as it may sound, I do not like to read Barbara Kingsolver. I do not think shell lose sleep over that, either. My moneys on the probability that she doesnt like my work either. Sometimes readers will buy a bestseller thinking its properly vetted and is a one-size-fits-all good read. Bestsellers are no different than the other books in the world when it comes to fans and non-fans. Nobody can write for all readers. Granted, that celebrity frenzy and strong word-of-mouth drive can sell a lot of books. And finally, you do not have to like all the classics. I love mysteries. Ill read Poe and Doyle. But when I finally find thetime to sit down with a book, to sip tea and relax at the end of my day, I want a story that carries me away. War and Peace aint gonna do it for me. Do not be afraid to dislike writing. At the same time, do not take it personally when someone dislikes yours. Avoid callingthem names and wishing ill-harm to their families. We cant read or like all books. What a boring world that would be . . . without diversity . . . without the effort of discovery . . . without the free rein to seek and find the authors that reallymake us happy to jump into a story.

Islam is based on monotheism, like Christianity and Judaism, and Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) is believed to be the last prophet. The concept of worship in Islam is that every act can be considered an act of worshipping if it does done the way Allah has commanded His believers to. Apart from that, there are also five pillars of Islam, which are compulsory for every Muslim. These are ‘Kalima Tayyaba’ the authentication of faith, five prayers a day, fasting, Almsgiving or Zakaat, and pilgrimage called Hajj (once in a lifetime). As contrary to what is portrayed, Islam is not an extremist religion. It does not teach the followers to submit themselves completely either to the religion or to the worldly affairs, but to take a middle road between them and take care of their worldly matters in accordance to the religion. Islam, Judaism and Christianity are called Abrahamic religions. Islam is theologically and historically conne cted to other Monotheist religions Judaism and Christianity. To Muslims, Jews and Christians are ‘People of The Book’ and are respected for it. Belief in Injil (The Gospel of Jesus) is very important to Muslims, and Jewish history is taught in Islam as its own (ReligionFacts, 2012). But still Muslims believe that Jews and Christians have incorrect beliefs based on incomplete revelations. Jews believe that Islam and Christianity are wrongly interpreted extended forms of Judaism. Christians consider Judaism as a religion with partial revelation but consider Islam to be a false religion. Islam and Christianity were originated in the same geographical location, in the Middle East. Islam was founded in 622 CE in Arabia and Christianity in 33 CE in Palestine. Even though both Islam and Christianity believe in monotheism, Christian’s belief is slightly different. They believe in Trinity Monotheism which divides God into three sanctified persons and Jesus as the son of G od. Muslims however believe that Jesus’ birth was a miracle and Mary was a Virgin yet they do not believe that Jesus is the son of God and that is considered as a Shirk in Islam. In spite of this both believe in one God. The other spiritual entities in Islam and Christianity are angels and demons (and Jinns in Muslims). The humans who preach their respective religions are called prophets in Islam and Saints in Christianity. Regarding Jesus Muslims believe that he is a true prophet of God and his teachings were misinterpret, Jesus did not die but his spirit got lifted to the heavens and that he will be come again but can not be resurrected as he did not die In the first place. Christians believe that Jesus died when he was being crucified and then rose from the dead after three days and after resurrection and is believed to come back on the Day of Judgment. Holy revelations were through prophets and compiled into the Holy Quran in Islam and into the Holy Bible in Christianity. According to Islam, humans have the ability to do bad as well as good whereas in Christianity it is believed that man tends to be attracted by evil by nature. In Islam escape from hell is achieved by doing good actions and having true beliefs as well as by maintaining and upholding the Five Pillars of Islam. In Christianity salvation can be achieved by having true beliefs, and through performing sacraments. Wrongdoers will go to eternal hell and good people will go an eternal heaven in both Islam and Christianity. Islam and Judaism are also similar in theology and history. Like Islam, Judaism follows strict monotheism and believes in one God and believes in angels and demons

The main purpose of the right to counsel under Miranda rights is to restrict police officials from using coercive methods of interrogation while the suspect is under the custody of police officials. Another purpose of the right to counsel under Miranda rights is to protect an individual’s right to plead guilty under the regulations of the Fifth Amendment. Under Miranda rights, the suspect is allowed to obtain aid from an attorney before he is interrogated and even while the interrogation process is taking place. If the suspect asks the police officials for an attorney, it becomes obligatory for the police officials to put a stop to all activities categorized as integration. In case of Maine v. Moulton case, the judge stated that the suspect or defendant should not be restricted from obtaining services from an attorney before the trial proceedings take place or while the suspect is in police custody because this action can have a much damaging effect as compared to rejection of right to counsel during the proceedings of the case (Champion, 2005, p.369). The defendant even has a right to act as an attorney himself if he has the capability to perform duties of an attorney and can defend himself if the defendant does not have these capabilities, then the defendant has to obtain assistance from an attorney.
